Ms. Boire's Philosophy of Teaching

The purpose of a teacher's portfolio is to supplement their resume by providing some insight into their beliefs, method of teaching, and demonstrate their growth throughout their career.

Views on Teaching & Learning

"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." William Arthur Ward has eloquently captured the essence of the kind of teacher I strive to be. Growing up, I always looked forward to September because it was an opportunity for me to learn. I truly enjoyed learning. I always found ways to make doing my homework more fun. My passion for learning has never ceased and now I share my dedication. I aim to be the great teacher that William Arthur Ward describes, inspiring today's youth in the fields of science and technology, while teaching the basics they need to survive on their own. I want to guide their aspirations, show them that learning is fun, and help them appreciate the rewards of a great education.

I like to utilize my specialized knowledge and geographic surroundings to create a hook for students to enjoy learning. For example, during a co-op work placement as a camp counsellor I used the nearby abandoned limestone quarry as the focus of my program. The schedule began with a short hike to the quarry and once there, I presented a short lecture. After delivering my lesson on the importance of geology and chemistry, how they apply to mining limestone and, the benefits of mining limestone, I engaged the students in an experiment. I believe the success of my program was founded in a hands-on demonstration of how chemistry is applied in the real world. From this experience I realized the joys of teaching. I discovered that working with youths was extremely satisfying because I was able to make a positive contribution to their learning process by sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm. Learning is easier when it’s FUN and through the rapport I develop with my students, many will agree they learned more than they thought they would.

Teaching Abroad

I am very interested in teaching overseas for several reasons. First of all, I want to be an active contributor to a global culture of tolerance and understanding. In addition, I want to fully integrate into the community in which I teach so that I can learn at the same time. My geographic preference is in Latin America or Europe, but I am open and willing to live anywhere.

Through life experiences I have discovered the importance of traveling. There is so much to learn from the explosive volcanoes on Montserrat, to the jungles of Costa Rica, to the Buddhist temples of Thailand. I want to be a part of the experience for today’s youth who are learning abroad.

I enjoyed living with roommates from different countries in the past as I delighted in answering their questions about English grammar and Canadian culture. Together we were sharing cultural traditions and building an understanding of our differences. My work experiences, obtained through part-time work, co-op placements and full-time employment upon graduation, have proven my ability to adapt and be resourceful within changing environments.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to taste a new culture and teach abroad!
